How Ascot inclusively prepares students for a global future

No students should be left behind or overlooked, including those who may have learning differences and are more vulnerable in our society. At Ascot International School, an IB World School in Bangkok, every student has an equal opportunity to thrive and excel. They do this by incorporating a multi-agency strategy, Inclusive Learning Practices into their curriculum. With this strategy in place, students are set up for success in an ever-changing global landscape.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) for all levels

One way Ascot International School promotes inclusivity in their curriculum is by offering English as an Additional Language (EAL) to students who don’t speak it as their first language. The teachers there help students fill in any language gaps so they can do well in school. However, aside from accessing the academic aspects of a curriculum, Ascot International School’s EAL also helps students on a day-to-day basis. It helps them express themselves, build friendships, and develop interests.

Evolving EAL approach

Inclusivity meets fun in the Early Years. At this stage, the school specifically designed their EAL classes to take advantage of the ‘critical period’ in which students can acquire languages rapidly. Students are exposed to repetitive language patterns through playful activities, such as games, competitions, and even singing. This nurturing setting allows students to overcome initial barriers like shyness or phonetic challenges. Thus laying a strong foundation for their future academic journey.

In the Primary Years, the EAL support evolves slightly. At this stage, Ascot International School combines both in-class and out-of-class support to make sure students can keep up with their friends while getting the help they need to ace English.

When students enter the more academically demanding Secondary Years, Ascot International School’s inclusive education model evolves to meet their diverse needs. During Key Stage 3, the curriculum remains consistent but comes with extra support. For example, students can opt out of Mandarin classes for additional English lessons. Plus, EAL teachers may provide guidance during English classes to help students access subject content.

Moving on to Key Stage 4, the students will go through an assessment process to decide if they should take English as their first or second language in the IGCEs. With this approach, every student has a defined route towards success and a seamless transition into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), irrespective of their skill level.

Nurturing every student’s potential with learning diversity

In addition to language support, Ascot International School also values all types of learning differences in their Inclusive Learning Practices. The school believes that every student should have the chance to participate in lessons and activities, regardless of their learning challenges or unique abilities.

To achieve this, Ascot International School implements differentiated learning strategies that cater to individual interests and abilities. Teachers adjust the content, process, product, and environment to ensure all students can access the curriculum effectively. At Ascot International School, success is measured by progress. Therefore, their personalised approach is underpinned by a culture that values and celebrates each student’s achievements.

Moreover, Ascot International School works hard to make sure that students and staff with disabilities feel comfortable and supported. The school is proactive in meeting their needs and making necessary changes to create an inclusive environment where everyone can learn and participate in school activities.

Ascot International School’s Inclusive Learning Practices prepare students to become empathetic, resilient, and resourceful global citizens no matter what their backgrounds and needs are.
