Message from Head of School

Recently at the EARCOS (East Asia Regional Conference of Schools) Leadership Conference, one of the keynote speakers presented on supporting communities to grow together.  The key aspect of this presentation was to highlight the importance of community and how when students are part of a group where they belong, they flourish.  The same is true for adults.  When we know we belong, we become the best we can be.

Schools can be challenging because whilst we strive for academic excellence, we also need to be communities where everyone belongs.  Belonging is understanding that despite our differences, we accept, support and encourage each other knowing we are working towards a common goal.  At Ascot, that goal is to provide your students with the best education we can in a caring, family-like environment.

This week the school trialled a different drop off and pick up route. The purpose behind it was to see if we can improve traffic flow, whilst providing additional safety for students, in particular our younger students.  We gathered the information we needed but would like to hear from the community their feedback. On Tuesday a survey will be sent to all families to gather information.

Early Years

Our Early Years students are hard at work this term learning collaboratively about celebrations. They have continued their learning looking at Bonfire Night, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is great for our students to learn about different faiths and cultures around the world. This learning helps our little inquirers to understand the world around them and to appreciate the beliefs of others in a global, international context.

Rehearsals for the Learning Gala at the end of Term 1 are well underway and is sure to be an impressive event. We are delighted that we can welcome you to share with us in person this year. With all of these things happening, we are also seeing child-led learning in the classroom which fosters independence and self motivation as well as a keenness amongst the students to be creative, working on construction projects which fit with their units of inquiry too.

Primary

Students from our Primary School have started to enjoy excursions this term with Year 4 visiting Madam Tussauds, Year 3 visiting a museum and Year 1 having a day trip to the aquarium before the winter break. In Term 2 we hope to see Year 2, 5 and 6 going out for a trip too. Our Year 4, 5 and 6 students have all had the opportunity to visit the residential experiences and build some lasting memories. We as a school are very grateful to those teachers who supported this opportunity for our children and made the experiences possible as well as to our families whose children attended too.

We have seen an increase in our student engagement through the student council and Head Students too. Their leadership has resulted in a change to our assembly organisation and structure which we are trialling and tweeking over the coming weeks. We hope in Term 2 that we will be able to begin inviting families to assembly as well.

Students are in the process of organising some lunch time activities for their peers and are working with Mr Huns to lead our House Colours Day events on Friday 9th December. These leadership opportunities are so valuable to our students in their self confidence, personal growth and in prompting the Learner Profile Attributes in and around our school.

Secondary

Year 7, 8 and 9 – Parents’ residential presentaion will take place this Tuesday, 6th December. All parents from these year groups are invited. Please find the link on our Toddle announcement. The residential will take place at iCAMP, Kanchanaburi in the beginning of Term 2.1 from Monday 16th January to Friday, 20th January. The facilities and planned activities look amazing! We look forward to telling you more about all the things planned for the students at iCAMP.

Year 11 to 13 – Students travelled to Surat Thani by plane earlier this week for their residentials at Khao Sok National Park. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to forget about their studies temporarily and reconnect with themselves and nature. After an entire week there, they would surely look forward to a long weekend of rest ahead and come back fully refreshed for their next week of school work!

ParentsPlease be reminded that Secondary School starts at 7:40 every morning with tutor registration. If a student arrives after 7:40 they will be marked as late. It is very important that they arrive on time to school, so they can receive daily notices and are fully prepared for Period 1.

House Colours Day – All preparations have been made for the first House Colours day of this Academic Year. This event will be on Friday, 9th December. There will be six activities throughout the day. Students will take part in futsal, volleyball, benchball, chess, music and science. These six activities will change with each house colours day, which will happen two more times this year. It is definitely one of my favourite day of the whole school year and I’m really looking forward to this one!
