Preparing your child for an Ascot education: a guide for parents

You have successfully enrolled your child at Ascot International School, congratulations and welcome! We are very excited to be providing your child with the best education in Thailand, but you may be wondering if you can help prepare your child before they begin their schooling. As a Thai international school delivering an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School education, our curriculum primarily focuses on equipping students with the tools and skills to seek knowledge independently and collaborate effectively. However, irrespective of if your child is starting school for the first time or they are coming from another educational background, there are things which you can do to set up your child for success.

Establish healthy habits

Routines and habits are the critical foundations which help us to achieve our goals. Without good habits, it is difficult (and often impossible) to make the most of the opportunities and experiences presented to us. Before your child begins their schooling with us, we recommend you work with them to establish healthy habits.

It is harder than ever to get a good night’s sleep. Bombarded with screens and instant gratification at our fingertips, it’s tempting to stay up late and suffer the consequences tomorrow. However, sleep is arguably the most important factor for our health both mentally and physically, and when done right, sleep increases our cognitive function and ability to complete tasks. When creating sleep routines, consider:

    • Children often need more than the recommended 8 hours due to their developing brain (even more so for teenagers and young adults).
    • Consistency is crucial, so set the same bedtime every night and alarm clock for each morning where possible.
    • Minimise your child’s screen time before bed and when waking up.
    • Help children moderate their caffeine and sugar intake (especially during the evening).

As well as encouraging positive sleep habits, make sure your child is nourished by healthy food and water intake. Look to provide:

    • More fruit and vegetables.
    • Home-cooked meals as opposed to takeaway.
    • Less sweets and sugary beverages, and;
    • A water bottle for drinking throughout the day while on the go.

At Ascot, all of our student’s meals are prepared by Premier Chef, a professional catering group specialising in fresh and nutritious meals for students. Before beginning your education at Ascot International, help your child to understand the principles and necessity of basic nutrition.

Teach general skills and knowledge

While students at Ascot will receive a complete education tailored to their needs and abilities, it is beneficial to help them start off on the right foot by encouraging them to learn general skills. We recommend teaching basic skills such as literacy, numeracy and social etiquette before your children start their schooling, but there are other skills you may also consider teaching:

    • Touch typing and using technology.
    • Pattern recognition.
    • Principles of financial responsibility.
    • Problem solving.

These skills are often taken for granted by people, but they can be seeded in children from a young age to help them develop into more mature adults.

Resilience and emotional regulation

Education can at times be a frustrating process for children. They have high expectations placed upon them to learn and grow consistently. Along the journey, they will certainly encounter setbacks, so it is important to prepare them to remain resilient and regulate their emotions effectively.

Dealing with failure can be taught through involving your children in activities such as sports. While you may find your child becoming frustrated initially (with tantrums and quitting being very common), persevere and help them to understand that failure is just a part of life. Ascot prides itself on offering a variety of extra-curricular activities for our students to participate in, and these are the perfect places for children to develop resilience and persistence.

Also take this opportunity before your child begins school to spend quality time with them. By doing this, you can develop a stronger relationship, encourage communication and demonstrate it is okay for them to voice their frustrations or concerns openly.

We also recommend working with your child to practice emotional regulation and self-control. While it’s normal to become frustrated, there are healthier ways to cope with these emotions. Discuss practices such as:

    • Meditation
    • Mindfulness and reflection.
    • Compassion and empathy.

These practices can help children moderate their behaviour and encourage them to progress.

By working with your child to develop healthy habits, mindsets and skills before beginning school at Ascot International, you are helping them to get the most out of their education.
