A child’s education does not happen only inside the classroom. Parents, teachers and the wider school community all have an important part to play.
At Ascot International School, our Primary Parent Partnership Experience gave families an opportunity to step into their children’s learning environment and experience part of the school day together.
This year, the experience also connected with World Gratitude Day, bringing a simple but meaningful idea into our Primary classrooms: taking time to recognise the people, experiences and relationships that make a positive difference in our lives.
Children spend an important part of their day at school, but learning and personal development continue at home.
A strong home-school partnership helps parents and teachers understand the child from different points of view. Teachers see how children learn, communicate and interact at school, while families know their children in ways that go far beyond the classroom.
Bringing these perspectives together can create a more connected learning experience.
At Ascot, families are viewed as important partners in a child’s development. Communication and collaboration between school and home help us understand how we can support each learner as they grow.
During our Primary Parent Partnership Experience, parents did more than visit the school.
They joined their children in classroom activities and had an opportunity to see learning from their child’s perspective.
Sitting together, talking, reflecting and completing activities may seem simple, but these moments can help parents better understand what their children experience during a normal school day.
For students, having a parent join their learning environment can also make the experience feel special. Children have an opportunity to share their classroom, their ideas and part of their learning journey with their families.
Instead of keeping home and school as two separate parts of a child’s life, experiences like this help connect them.
The event took place in recognition of World Gratitude Day, giving our Primary community an opportunity to think about what gratitude means in everyday life.
Gratitude does not need to involve something big.
It can begin with recognising a friend who helped us, thanking someone who listened to us, appreciating our family, or noticing something positive that happened during the day.
Through conversations and reflection, students and parents explored these ideas together.
For children, learning about gratitude can also support the development of kindness, empathy and awareness of other people. These qualities are important not only at school, but also as children build relationships and become more independent.
Academic learning is only one part of a child’s development.
At Ascot, wellbeing is part of our wider approach to educating the whole child. We want students to develop knowledge and skills while also learning how to understand themselves, build healthy relationships and care about the people around them.
Taking time to reflect can help children recognise positive experiences and the people who support them.
It also gives families an opportunity to have conversations that may not always happen during a busy school day.
Questions as simple as “What made you happy today?” or “Who helped you today?” can encourage children to pause, reflect and communicate their feelings.
These experiences also connect naturally with learning in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).
Learning in the PYP is not limited to remembering information. Students are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, reflect on their experiences and take an active role in their learning.
At Ascot, our Primary approach encourages students to explore, question, create and reflect.
The IB Learner Profile also supports qualities that connect closely with the Parent Partnership Experience and World Gratitude Day.
Students can develop as Caring learners by showing kindness and empathy towards others. They can become more Reflective by thinking about their experiences and actions. They can also grow as Communicators by sharing their thoughts and listening to different perspectives.
These qualities can develop in lessons, but they can also grow through everyday conversations and relationships.
Parent partnership is also about creating a community where families feel that they are part of school life.
When parents, teachers and students have opportunities to learn and communicate together, they can build stronger relationships and a better understanding of one another.
This sense of connection is an important part of the Ascot community.
Our aim is to create an environment where children feel safe to participate, share their ideas, ask questions and be themselves. It reflects our belief in creating a school where everyone belongs and where every child can feel Known, Valued and Heard.
Our Primary Parent Partnership Experience was more than a morning activity.
It was an opportunity for parents to enter their children’s learning world, for students to share part of their school experience, and for teachers and families to strengthen the relationships that support each child.
World Gratitude Day gave us another reason to stop for a moment and appreciate those connections.
We thank all the families who joined us and continue to play an active role in our school community.
