IB Visual Arts (6)

Many people think great artists are born with natural talent. In reality, creativity grows when students feel confident enough to explore, experiment, and even make mistakes.

That is one of the main ideas behind the updated IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) Visual Arts course. Students are encouraged to ask questions, test new ideas, and develop their own artistic style instead of simply creating the “perfect” piece of artwork.

At Ascot International School, we believe that creativity is a skill that can be developed through curiosity, reflection, and hands-on learning.

Our Year 12 students began the school year by exploring the updated IB DP Visual Arts syllabus through a workshop called “Playful Beginnings.”

Instead of focusing on perfect drawings, students challenged themselves to think differently.

They experimented with large-scale drawings, worked without looking at the paper, and explored different materials and creative techniques. These activities encouraged students to let go of perfection and enjoy the creative process.

During the workshop, students also reflected on questions such as:

“How does it feel to draw without control?”

These conversations helped students think about creativity in new ways while becoming more aware of their own artistic process.

Trying something new is not always easy. Many students worry about making mistakes or creating work that is not perfect.

The IB Visual Arts course encourages students to see mistakes as opportunities to learn.

By experimenting with different materials, techniques, and ideas, students discover what works for them. They begin to develop confidence, solve problems creatively, and express their own ideas in unique ways.

This process is just as valuable as the final artwork.

IB Visual Arts (1)

One of the biggest goals of the IB Diploma Programme Visual Arts course is to help students develop their own artistic identity.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Explore personal interests
  • Investigate artists from different cultures
  • Experiment with a variety of materials
  • Reflect on their creative decisions
  • Create meaningful artwork that tells their own story

These experiences help students become independent learners who are confident in expressing themselves.

Studying Visual Arts is about much more than drawing or painting.

Students also develop important life skills, including:

  • Creative thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Communication
  • Reflection
  • Confidence
  • Independence

These skills are valuable in university, future careers, and everyday life.

At Ascot International School, students are encouraged to think creatively, take risks, and develop the confidence to express their own ideas.

Through the IB Diploma Programme, learning goes beyond the classroom. Students become curious thinkers, independent learners, and confident young adults who are ready for the future.
